The Upper Calder Valley Artists Network (UCAN) is an initiative currently in its first year. During 2010 it aspires to become a fantastic resource for artists and creative people living and working in the Upper Calder Valley.
The Network has 4 broad aims:
- To help creative people in the Calder Valley share and receive information.
- To provide exhibiting, training, funding or employment opportunities for artists locally, regionally and nationally.
- To facilitate artists, craftists, makers and creative practitioners to make useful connections and gain support.
- To provide a central website and organisation for the public to gain information about creative practice, exhibitions and events in the area.
Northlight Art Studios Ltd are leading on the development of UCAN and have contracted two independent arts consultants to conduct the groundwork for the initiative. By the end of 2010 it is hoped that UCAN will exist and thrive independently, run by a diverse and vibrant steering group. It is also hoped that further funding opportunities will have been identified or secured to continue the network’s development. This project is being funded by the Arts Council during 2010.
During 2010, consultation will take place with creative people, organisations, businesses and the wider community in the Upper Calder Valley. The consultation will aim….
- To find out what the shared and individual needs from a Network might be
- To recruit and train a steering group to take the Network forward
- To identify further funding opportunities to sustain the network
To do all of this, UCAN needs you!

What is the Upper Calder Valley? (UCV)
For the purposes of UCAN, we understand the Upper Calder Valley to be situated between Walsden and Sowerby Bridge, incorporating Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mythrolmroyd, and everything in-between.
So if you are creative practitioner - or a creative consumer, and you live or work within this area, or in the surrounding villages or hills adjoining the valley, we hope that you will contribute to and enjoy UCAN.
If you live close by and feel that you would benefit from, or can contribute to UCAN, you’re also welcome!
